What is breast augmentation?

Breast Augmentation is the most common aesthetic surgical procedure year after year. It allows patients to improve the shape and size of their presents with breast implants and give their breasts a more youthful appearance. After the short surgical procedure most patients are back to work within a week.

At More Beautiful You, we tailor every augmentation to each individual patient. Board-certified plastic surgeon Johnny Franco M.D. will discuss everything from implant options to sizing to ensure that your aesthetic goals are met. Our sizing system also allows patients to visualize what they will look like after their breast augmentation which will help in determining the best options for the patient.

Everything you wanted to know about breast augmentation!

Are you a good candidate?

Breast augmentation may be the right choice for you if:

  • Excessive weight loss or pregnancy has changed the size and shape of your breasts.
  • You have difficulty in finding clothing that fits proportionately.
  • You have significant asymmetry in breasts.
  • You want to enhance the size of your breasts.

Silicone vs. Saline Breast Implants

  • Silicone Implants: Silicone implants tend to give patients a much softer and more natural appearing breast. In patients that are very thin, Johnny Franco M.D. tends to recommend silicone implants since they don’t have much breast tissue to cover the implant.
  • Gummy Bear Implants: Recently, the highly cohesive gel implants were introduced, called gummy bear implants in the media. These highly cohesive gel implants have a silicone that stays together, and are not as liquid as the previous generations of silicone implants.
  • Saline Implants: Saline implants have been around for years and patients also tend to be very happy with them. They just are a little firmer and in larger sizes can give patients more of a round fake appearance. In very thin patients, the edges of the saline implant are usually a little more palpable than with a silicone implant.

Breast Augmentation Incisions

Johnny Franco M.D. will work with you to determine the best incision point for your breast augmentation!

  • Nipple Incision (peri-areolar): The areola skin border is a great place to hide the incision as this natural transition of color will make the incision very difficult to see once it has completely healed. However, if the areolar complex is very small this approach may not be an option as the implant has to fit though the incision.
  • Under the Breast Incision (inframammary): This incision is very common as it is a direct approach and in the majority of patients hides very well. Patients with darker skin or a tendency to form thicker scars this approach should be avoided as it may not hide as well as other methods.
  • Armpit Incision (transaxillary): This approach is great in that it avoids any scars on the breast. With the use of the endoscope the implant placement can be very precise and atraumatic. The natural creases in the axilla hide the incisions and are difficult to find with time.

Breast Implant Placement

Breast implants can either be placed under the breast tissue (subglandular) or under the muscle (submuscular). Because most patients want a result that will feel and look the most natural, the majority of breast augmentations in the United States are performed under the muscle. However, there are certain cases where an implant would be placed over the muscle and it’s important to talk to your board certified plastic surgeon to guide you through the best option for your desired result.

Benefits of Submuscular Implant Placment

  1. The implant is less visible thus decreasing the chances of visible rippling
  2. Decreases the change of scar tissue forming around the implant
  3. The result has a more natural feel and appearance

Breast Augmentation Recovery

For the majority of patient the surgery and recovery is very straight forward and they are extremely happy with the results. The surgery is a day procedure, which means that patients go home the same day.

They are then seen the next day or two after their surgery by their physician. For the first couple of days patients will feel pressure on their chest. This typically comes from the muscle being stretched by the implant underneath it. Occasionally patients will feel some burning at the incision, however this is usually minimal. It also takes patients a day or two to get all of the anesthesia out of their system so that they start feeling more like their normal self.

The tendency is for patients to do to much as they start to feel pretty good after a couple days. It is important for patients to take it easy for a couple weeks. They can resume all of their normal daily activities after a week. And most patients are back to work after several days depending on their specific occupation.

The breast implants themselves tend to sit a little high the first couple weeks and then settle as the skin and muscle relax and the implants fall into position. It takes several months for all of the swelling to resolve and the implants to completely settle, however patients already look great after a couple weeks.

I hope this gives you at least an idea of the general recovery and process of a breast augmentation with breast implants. Please consult with your board certified plastic surgeon.
